Announcing: Under the Reticule! Eternal Silence Community Event
We’re organising our very first community event! Under the Reticule! will be a regular event where we will get everyone playing the latest and greatest mods and online games with and against each other in a test of our steely shooting skills and social apptitude. This week, in honour of its introduction to Steam, we’re going to be playing Eternal Silence, a Source mod that pits one huge spacecraft against the other, tasking the players with either boarding the ship to destroy it within by applying your best FPS skills, or dog fighting with space-fighters to take it on from without.
Phill and I had a blast playing for an hour or so earlier, and despite some early confusion over what was going on, it quickly became incredibly fun to play. With some loyal Reticulians charging into the fray gallently alongside us, it should be pretty awesome.
In order to join this spectacular event, simply join our Steam community here: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/thereticule
It’s pretty simple, just come online into our chat room for about 6:00pm GMT on Sunday 8th, and we’ll essentially be piling into a decent server with enough room. We’ve got some interesting plans for future events, so even if Eternal Silence doesn’t seem like your thing, we’ll be sure to try new and interesting things every week. We’re of course all open to suggestions for games, so feel free to let us know and we’ll see what we can organise!
In the mean time, you can set it downloading on Steam by clicking on the “Mods” catagory on the store, and clicking on Eternal Silence from there. There is a game manual here, and some excellent fan made videos here.
See you in space!

Figured no one else would be up at 4am apart from MEEEEEEEEEEEE
Damn, I’d love to join you guys but I already have a date with L4D that evening.
Well, this seems as good a time as any to stop lurking, so, hi everyone! I shall hopefully join you for some sci-fi shooting of people, proving a liability to all.
I played this while I was at PC Zone last summer for a week, I wrote something on it, though it probably got heavily edited!
Anyway my impressions were that it had a lot of potential back then, but that it was very silent, could barely find anyone to play with and it was often very laggy. Can’t see myself having the time to play in this tomorow, maybe some other time though ;)
Yeah, I remember the same when I played it a while back. What a difference a year or so makes!
So long as you pick a decent server you can have a lot of fun. The Steam release seems to have given it a new lease of life too. Plenty of full servers.
Yeah that is what is so good about getting the mods on Steam like they are, they get a much larger audience which is all really good for them.
This is a really cool idea, I’ll definitely try to be on tomorrow.
Just gave it a spin, and its pretty fun when its not lagging. The weapons are a bit meh and its pretty much impossible to have a decent dogfight, so most of the time your just going to be spamming your cannons at the big ships. Oh well still entertaining enough, especially when its like 10 people storming a base :) i’ll see what i can conjure up in the realm of time tommorow, though i might be a little late :/
No worries! Just join us whenever you can :)
Huh, I had never heard of that game before… Well, looks good. Downloading it now.
Surprised to see they finally added Dystopia to steam as well.. That seriously was the first well polished HL2 mod and it took them over 2 years to add it… Had a lot of fun playing that, nice community as well.
But well, if you compare it with something like TF2…. I quited playing it after TF2 came out.
Well things were a success!
We had 8 or so people on at one point, and so far in escape of my most optimistic estimates, and generally we kicked arse. Except for one irritatingly efficient fellow on the opposing team named Black Raven. He was quite clearly the Red Baron of the Silence. Even his dogfighting prowess wasn’t enough to combat our sheer tactical finesse however, and we won through the day, slipping bombs into their heavily defended carriers, or storming through to capture their systems.

So far, we’re considering Dystopia or perhaps the Hidden as next weeks Under the Reticule event. If anyone can think of some others to think about that would be great. Also, if anyone has any preference for when we play, that would be handy as well!
Yep, tactical finesse was definitely on show, as was running around crowded hallways trying to avoid being set on fire. I really enjoyed that, in fact – thanks everyone :) Not nearly as terrifyingly inaccessible as I’d thought.
As for next time … I’ve played neither Hidden nor Dystopia, and I’m up for either.
haha, indeed, there was a good deal of “Oh god he’s got a flame thrower!”
Glad you enjoyed it :)
