East India Company – The Verdict

East India Company – The Verdict

The East India Companies were perhaps the closest thing to Eve Online but-on-earth that history has to show for. They were vast nefarious organizations exploiting and backstabbing each other and whole native populations while cutting a profit. These things destroyed nations. They shaped whole continents in ways still felt today. So why on earth is East India Company so damned boring? I think the simple fact is, Nitro has managed to capture the basic mechanics of early-modern capitalism without embracing…

Democracy 2 – The Verdict and Other Thoughts

Democracy 2 – The Verdict and Other Thoughts

Eying up the sleek gun barrel pointed at him by a flak-vest wearing, flag wielding patriot assassin, Prime Minister Greg Wild couldn’t help but reflect on his years in office. He’d turned the militaristic constitutional monarchy of Mexilando into a techno-liberal utopia; rich in technology with a massive space program and prosperous with a financial reserve of £200bn without the expense of the environment, it seemed that for all this prosperity, he couldn’t keep everyone happy. Those damned patriots. Repeated…

Preview – East India Company

Preview – East India Company

Standing atop your rickety deck, sea spitting into your face as a storm rages all around you, East India Company successfully provokes nausea. In the best possible way. It’s impossible not to feel your stomach churning while you take direct command of your ships, steering through the full fury of a high seas storm.

Killing Floor – The Verdict

Killing Floor – The Verdict

Recommending Killing Floor is ultimately difficult. It feels dated, plays like a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004 (who’d have thought?!) and hasn’t got the polish you’d expect off a modern retail title. I have had quite a lot of fun with it. It can be enjoyable, it really can. But it’s neither particularly deep, nor do I see it having much lasting potential You and five of your mouthy British mates are dropped in an open location infested with the…

I can’t wait for… Solium Infernum

I can’t wait for… Solium Infernum

It’s a Machiavellian style politics and strategy game set in Milton’s picture of Hell. Oh my. I think we knew Vic Davis’ next game would be good, given how excellent the last, Armageddon Empire’s was. Solium Infernum looks set to improve on what made that great, but also more importantly, deliver a totally unique game play experience if all goes to plan. But what is it exactly? I’ve set about here to put together the information released in blogs and…

Games Consoles Dying Now?

Games Consoles Dying Now?

It seems we’re all too familiar these days with people hailing these days those of a dying PC gaming platform. Interestingly however, industry analyst Michael Pachter has in more words said that it’s consoles that are going through their retirement. Meanwhile, with news of PC actually being the biggest market, and WoW on track to make 2bn by 2013, things are looking significantly better for the PC, that’s certain. That Empire: Total War managed to knock Killzone 2 off the…

Fallout 3 : The Pitt – The Verdict

Fallout 3 : The Pitt – The Verdict

Bethesda very nearly lost me for good with the last attempt at DLC. It really was genuinely atrocious. Thankfully, The Pitt proves a far more worthwhile, interesting and enjoyable experience. Technicalities regarding its use of Games For Windows Live weren’t much of an issue this time around – the experience of getting it running last time wasn’t repeated. But I’m sure there’s a better way of doing it in future once the deal with Microsoft runs out. Steam anyone? Anyway….
