Saints Row The Third – The Verdict

Saints Row The Third – The Verdict

It seems rather alien now, to think that at one time the Saints Row series had somewhat of an identity crisis. An exclusive early 360 title, it was often – with good reason – compared to Grand Theft Auto, with a larger focus on gang warfare and a little more cartoonish than it’s most obvious rival. By the second game, Saints Row had firmly established an identity of it’s own, deciding to go down the silly OTT route, throwing faeces almost as far as it threw caution to the wind. Saints Row: The Third retains some of that garishness, but really shows a refinement in it’s delivery of the main story that marks it out in the series and more importantly, as it’s own title.

Orcs Must Die! – The Verdict

Orcs Must Die! – The Verdict

Poor Orcs. They get abused so much in many games, and none moreso than in Orcs Must Die!. They get squished, set on fire, chopped, smashed, frozen, thrown into goo and generally abused to the nth degree. But when it’s this much fun, even the NSPCO (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Orcs) will probably have a great time with this Steam and XBLA title.

Trackmania 2: The Verdict

Trackmania 2: The Verdict

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is a motto that divides game developers. Do they keep what works well for them and seems to be a winning formula at the risk of becoming stale? It’s clearly a dilemma that Nadeo, creators of the immensely popular Trackmania series faced when bringing out Trackmania 2.

Team Fortress 2: Mann at Work(shop)

Team Fortress 2: Mann at Work(shop)

It’s been a whole year since Team Fortress 2 opened up the Mann Co. store, dividing the player base into those that felt Valve were were placing too much emphasis on superfluous gubbins that had no impact on the game whatsoever and those that look awesome in a bowlerhatandohmygodIMUSTHAVEIT. Whatever you think of the store, it’s been an incredibly successful experiment, for both Valve and the model makers whose items now adorn the majority of games. To celebrate the one year ‘Manniversary’, Valve have launched the Steam Workshop, making it easier for more people to get in on the hat making action – and perhaps earn themselves some real money to buy themselves a fez. Because fezzes are cool.

Driver: San Francisco – The Verdict

Driver: San Francisco – The Verdict

I’ll admit, I didn’t have high hopes for Driver: San Francisco After the two most recent games in the series generally received as ‘mediocre’ and having never really gotten into the PSX-era games personally, the series wasn’t high on my radar. Joyfully, I’m pleased to say that the newest Driver game has proven me wrong in the best possible way.

Deus Ex Human Revolution – The Verdict

Deus Ex Human Revolution – The Verdict

Reviewing a game like Deus Ex: Human Revolution is tricky. How exactly do you review a game in which your experience can differ wildly from that of other people? Is it even possible to give a definitive answer on how you felt about the game when even somebody playing in the same room might make completely different decisions, and react entirely in their own way to those? Of course, I’m just being facetious but what’s obvious from the outset of the long awaited three-quel to one of the most loved PC games of all time is that it’s a game that’s not purely about the choice of your actions, but dealing with the consequences.
