Far Cry 3 – Alternative E3 Trailer

Far Cry 3 received a bloody good showing at E3, while it failed to match Battlefield 3 in my eyes, it received a very strong showing. Ubisoft obviously wanted to show off more and in the trailer below, you can see their alternative take on the original E3 showing.

The new trailer is a great watch, compare it with the original E3 trailer (below) and you start to get a sense of some of the freedom you will have when it comes to approaching combat. That freedom was one of the best aspects of Far Cry 2, and it fills me with confidence that you will be able to approach scenarios in a varied manner again.

I have been staring at my Steam link for Far Cry 2 quite a bit over recent weeks, and after watching these trailers, I think I am going to head back in. We all know that there were some problems in Far Cry 2, the constantly respawning patrols and malaria being the main ones, but if you were able to look past you found a very enjoyable open world shooter. I’m starting to get a bit of an itch to play it straight away just writing about it. I’m looking forward to seeing some more of Far Cry 3, I hope it keeps the spirit of the first two games in the series.

  1. Far Cry 3 certainly has potential. Snapped up FC2 right after completing Crysis 2 (was on sale). Looking forward to giving it a go, but, alas, bigger Vagranty fish to fry.

  2. Hrm, I’m not too convinced. Will the fps ever move past the bright red explosive barrel?

    When a shooter talks about a strategic approach, 99% of the time they mean, find a place where you can see all the barrels and line up the perfect shot. With my honed fps-vision all I was seeing there were the illogically placed canisters of explosives, primed and ready to blow that ramshackle base sky-high.

    1. Is not the barrel/crate a staple of gaming though? In Dungeon Siege there are barrels, in Kingpin there are crates. Half-Life could have been called Crate-Life and nobody would bat an eyelid.

      Barrels and crates are what we live with, yes they are often positioned in immersion breakingly obvious places, but they are something we have grown to live with.

      A few explosive barrels will do little to keep me from a game, in fact, I yearn for more of them!

      1. I accept that they’re an essential part of the FPS as we know them, even if it’s always been a cheap mechanic – we knew that back when they were in Doom – that’s not my issue though.

        Pretending your game has depth, choice and tactics, when it mostly amounts to finding a the best red barrel to shoot is pretty weak though.

        1. Fair points but what if the barrels are just one of the numerous choices that are posed to you? Does that make them more acceptable?

          1. Sure, I liked the Crysis 1 approach a lot (a game with plenty of barrels), where you were given the tools to approach situations how you wanted. Whether that was a full frontal assault, grabbing a vehicle and ploughing into a base, stealthing your way through, making shacks fall on peoples heads, or (best of all) death-by-plantpot.

            I’m overblowing this issue here a wee bit, but the FC3 trailer didn’t impress me a whole lot, because it seemed very staged, “Oh look, here’s a sniper rifle in a position handily overlooking the base, ooh there’s a barrel precisely placed to blow up the bridge.” I’d rather things were a bit more dynamic.

          2. Surprisingly I haven’t played Crysis 1, so I can’t comment too much but beyond that ‘omgwowzers’ of the graphics at the time, that was meant to be a highlight of the game. Not surprising considering it came from the same guys who made Far Cry 1.

            Oh I definitely agree about the sniper rifle, I really cringed when I saw that lying around there. I do like though how they have released two vids of the E3 scene, that is what appeals to me. Just from that video I can see a few other approaches which could be taken.
