Command & Conquer Remastered Collection – The Verdict

Command & Conquer Remastered Collection – The Verdict

In my Life in Games feature, I talked about my experience of playing demo of the original Command and Conquer as a kid, but that it was Red Alert 2 where my true love affair with the series started, a love affair that led me to create my first site. But I still fondly remember those missions in the demo of the original and seeing them again in Command and Conquer Remastered Collection is a joy.

Time to Bring Back cncnation.net?

Time to Bring Back cncnation.net?

The title of this post is a very obscure reference, one that maybe only a small handful of people will get. It’s well deserved though, as EA have sent the internet crazy by talking about Command and Conquer again, but this time, in the context of a PC release, not that inane Rivals mobile game they revealed earlier this year. Onwards!

Renegade X – The Final Beta

Renegade X – The Final Beta

There was a time before The Reticule was born when I tried my hand at running a Command and Conquer fansite, it was called cncnation.net and last a couple of years, at least until my enthusiasm for the series was destroyed by the falling standards of Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars and Red Alert 3. But I was always fascinated by the dedicated modding communities that were out there, and one of the biggest is nearing final release.

E3 From the UK – A Quick Look at EA and Ubisoft Presentations

E3 From the UK – A Quick Look at EA and Ubisoft Presentations

I didn’t watch the conferences from EA or Ubisoft live, I followed them on Twitter while watching Game of Thrones and Banshee. However much I love games, I do sometimes wonder whether they will ever quite match the story-telling and action found in shows from studios like HBO. Certainly nothing I’ve seen from E3 so far leads me to think we are entering a truly new generation of games, more that the consoles are finally catching up with the power found on PCs for a few years now. Despite this negative view, a few bits grabbed my attention from the EA and Ubisoft events.

On Demos

On Demos

Demos are wonderful things, they give us a glimpse into what a game is like and, in turn, whether the game is worth purchasing or not. I used to live on demos in the olden days, they were my link to the gaming world. There have been some demos which stand out above the rest, they may have introduced me to a game series, a new genre or were the entrance to what would be one of my favourite games of all time. These are some of the demos which stick out in my mind, and always will.

Top 10 New Worlds – No. 10: Command + Conquer

Top 10 New Worlds – No. 10: Command + Conquer

The quality of a game’s world can be defined by the depth and quality of its dedicated Wiki. The milestone is Wookiepedia. Anyone who’s ever made the mistake of clicking on a link to that veritable tome of largely superfluous knowledge will know what I mean. There’s pages there longer than anything the real wikipedia could boast. You’ll end up spending hours just reading through the damned things even if you’ve got only a passing interest. The point is though, the reason Star Wars is so successful is that the pageantry of its story telling and setting is largely more powerful than its fairly one dimensional characters and their personal stories.

Red Alert 3: Uprising – First Details

Red Alert 3: Uprising – First Details

ra3-uprising-pic

The first details on a new Red Alert 3 expansion pack have been revealed in the latest issue of PC Gamer UK. Subscriber copies have just been delivered while the mag will appear in shops on the 15th January.

The expansion will be titled Uprising and will be released this summer as a digital download. Uprising will take the Allied ending to Red Alert 3 as canon with the Soviets being cast as underdogs and the Empire of the Rising Sun battling to regain its honour. The fast pace of the original game will be maintained with a total of 11 new units filling out the tech trees.

One of these new units, as described by Senior Producer Amer Ajami will be like “Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr Freeze meets Super Mario” and will be known as the Cryo Legionnaire, a remix of RA2’s Chrono Legionnaire. The Soviets will see the Grinder appear, simply a tank with a massive meat grinder on the front. Continuing in their tradition, the Empire will get the biggest unit in the game in the Giga Fortress.

That is not all, Holly Valance will be making an appearance and there will be a new game mode: Commander’s Challenge. This new game mode promises to be a series of unique themed challenges each with their own special rules. Progressing through the scenarios will unlock more units to add to the mix.
