Our Week in Games – Week 70

Our Week in Games – Week 70

What’s happened this week in the gaming world? Oh yes, the beta for Titanfall has started, the conjecture on Twitter is that people have been going slightly mad trying to get access. Apparently some people have been buying codes on eBay for ludicrous prices. Valve took the brave step in allowing people to add tags to games which might have resulted in the expected nonsense. Meanwhile Kevin Spacey returned with House of Cards on Netflix which makes me wonder why can’t we get more games with episodic story-telling to equal The Walking Dead episodes?

Enough of that, on with the games.

Our Week in Games – Week 69

Our Week in Games – Week 69

The latest outrage in the games industry lies with the rebirth of a seminal favourite, Dungeon Keeper. EA released a new mobile version of the game this months using the now commonplace free-to-play philosophy. Their free-to-play methods seem to have done down like a paid of concrete boots with gamers, even the BBC picked up on the outrage. I haven’t played this monstrous, evil game yet…but my impression of mobile games like this is that you flick on once or twice during a day and have a quick blast before switching to something else. If you play like that, surely the in-app purchases aren’t such a big deal? But maybe that is just me wanting to play devil’s advocate as usual.

On a less controversial note, why not hit the break to check out our latest version of Our Week in Games.

Far Cry 3 – The Singleplayer Verdict

Far Cry 3 – The Singleplayer Verdict

I’ll come out and say that I have been blown away by Far Cry 3 from what I have played so far, I thought that it had a lot of potential from when I played it at the Eurogamer Expo, but that was limited to the open world and was only a relatively short experience. Playing Far Cry 3 in all its glory shows you what a brilliant game it really is. Note that this is only a Verdict based on the singleplayer side of things, there are co-operative and other multiplayer gubbins, but I haven’t touched them yet. Hit the jump for my thoughts.

New Far Cry 3 Trailer Shows Guns, Knives and Vehicles

As I take a few minutes away from Far Cry 3 I see an email about a new video for the tropical shooter showing off some wild action along with numerous machete based takedowns and some C4 loaded hang-gliders. I’ve been playing my review code for a few hours now, and I can firmly say that this is one heck of a shooter, and I’m playing it on the 360, not my first choice for an FPS’, but it just works so well. The game is out next Friday in the UK, I’ll have my Verdict up before launch, but so far things are looking very good. That trailer is after the break.

Far Cry 3 Hands On Report – Part Two

Far Cry 3 Hands On Report – Part Two

In Part One of my Far Cry 3 hands on report I talked a little bit about climbing a radio tower and assaulting a mercenary outpost with the help of a hang glider and jet ski. The second part of my report picks up after I have ensured the outpost is cleared.

The mission from the notice board asked me to eliminate a mercenary leader in a nearby camp with a melee or knife takedown. So far, while I had tried to assault the outpost quietly I ended up having to go in guns blazing; this mission would be my first chance of trying out some of the stealth mechanics.

Far Cry 3 Hands On Report – Part One

Far Cry 3 Hands On Report – Part One

During the Eurogamer Expo I was able to check out the Far Cry 3 demo a couple of times, the demo was PC based and looked amazing. This is the first part of my hands on report.

When I played a little bit of Far Cry 3 during my first day at the Expo I came away with mixed feelings, it seemed to have a lot of potential with the open world and RPG style elements, but that it wasn’t harnessing what it could do properly. That however was a by-product of a limited play test. On the last day of the Expo I had an extended 40 minute session with the game and fell in love with the open world environment. There weren’t any story missions to direct me, just the freedom of the island.

Far Cry 3 – The RPG Trailer

Far Cry 3 – The RPG Trailer

Watch out for big cats in game.

The more we see and hear about Far Cry 3, the more I am convinced that it is a meeting of FPS and RPG. Just take this latest trailer which you can find embedded below, it talks about side-missions, crafting and hunting wild animals. If they aren’t RPG-like elements, I don’t know what are. The current console generation might be drawing to a close, but there are some massive titles to come out still, and Far Cry 3 is certainly one of them.
