Our Week in Games – Week 94

Our Week in Games – Week 94

I covered all the nastiness that has been going on recently in my Editorial from Friday night, so I won’t dwell on that. I think the big news from the past week was the announcement from Nintendo that they are releasing a new model of the 3DS and 3DSXL…which is an interesting proposition. The new machine features a second analogue stick which the handheld has been crying out for since launch along with NFC capabilities which will let the device work with Nintendo’s new Amiibo figurines. There is also the small factor of an upgraded CPU, which in turn means that the upcoming Xenoblade Chronicles port will only be available on the new and improved machine. That doesn’t sound very Nintendo-like to be, previous hardware revisions for the 3DS have all been fully compatible with each other. I foresee this causing a lot of confusion if more games go the way of Xenoblade. Even worse, we won’t see the new 3DS machines until next year here in Europe.

Once you have digested that disappointment, why not hit the break to check the latest edition of Our Week in Games.

The Starmade Alpha – My God, it’s full of Blocks…

The Starmade Alpha – My God, it’s full of Blocks…

Minecraft was fun for a few hours. Eventually though, after the final blocks are placed in my wood and stone villa overlooking the sea, the sad truth of my endeavor starts to sink in – it’s all utterly pointless. At least with Lego you can at least pretend the things you build have function, but in the almost-endless forests of Notch’s masterpiece, it’s a case of build and move on.

Starmade is a little different. It lets you build fully functioning star-ships, stations and planetary complexes, fight pirates and other players, all in an infinite void. And it makes you use the word “blocks” uncomfortably often.

More DLC Skins Revealed for Minecraft 360 – Gears and Fable Make Appearance

More DLC Skins Revealed for Minecraft 360 – Gears and Fable Make Appearance

While it seems that the Xbox edition of Minecraft is always playing catch up, I can’t help but get just as exited over every update and every little bit of new content added as I did when playing on the PC. Owners of Minecraft 360 (as I like to refer to it as) are awaiting the release of the 1.7.3 update which will bring about shears, pistons and many bug fixes among other things.

Most notably though will be the option to customise the skin of your character thanks to a handy skin DLC pack planned for release along side the update. The price of the pack has not yet been stated but we do know that it will contain 40 skins including a King, a Creeper, Splosion Man, Covenant Grunt and Trials Man.

Five more skins have also recently been unveiled. The newcomers include: Ms Splosion Man, Clayton Carmine (Gears of War), Banjo (Banjo and Kazooie), Jack of Blades (Fable) and a prisoner.

Minecraft 360 – Impressions Of My First Twenty Minutes

Minecraft 360 – Impressions Of My First Twenty Minutes

I have just come back from spending twenty minutes with the just released Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition and I am pleased that I tried it. You see, I haven’t tried anything beyond the old browser based version of the game on the PC and I wasn’t overly keen on Terraria last Summer either. So to come away from a brief 20 minute play around with the tutorial, and to feel quite happy with what I played is a positive.

Minecraft Officially Released!!!

Minecraft Officially Released!!!

Last weekend saw the first ever Minecon convention launch with a sell out 2 day event in Las Vegas. The event was to mark the official release of Minecraft and to show some of the plans for the future of Minecraft and other games Notch has been working on. To date 4.1 million people have already bought Minecraft and many changes have been made for the ‘final’ version. I say ‘final’ because its unlikely that no more improvements or updates will ever be made to what is possibly the most anticipated indie game ever.

BdoubleO talks about life and all things Minecraft

The 11th of November 2011 is a big day for the gaming community. No I’m not talking about Skyrim but instead a game which in my eyes is just as big. At the time of writing it has already sold over 3.5 million digital copies before even leaving Beta and over 14.5 million people have signed up to the official website and these numbers are increasing all the time. Of course I’m talking about Minecraft.

Minecraft patch 1.8 officially released!

Minecraft patch 1.8 officially released!

Patch 1.8, also known as the “Adventure Update” is one half of the biggest and most anticipated update given to Minecraft yet and was officially released on Wednesday. Notch aka Marcus Persson the developer and lead designer for Minecraft showed a preview of the update at PAX in a gameplay style interview. He went over some of the new additions to the game whilst playing. A trailer has also been made for the patch release.

Notable additions from this patch include a new mob, the Enderman, who once spotted will only attack when you look away from it. Creative mode, which gives you unlimited resources and health and faster travel making it easier to build efficiently. You can now gain experience from killing mobs and gain levels from earning certain amounts of experience. Also included are Randomly generated NPC villages, the ability to sprint, underground dungeons and abandoned mine shafts.

A download to the update had been leaked earlier in the week which seemed to come from within Mojang itself but nothing was properly confirmed. Notch posted on his Twitter to say “I am fine with you using it. Make sure you get it from the leaked url we are hosting, though” and that he felt a lot better for the fans who were eager for the update.

I have been waiting for this update for a long time as it will add a great deal of depth to the game on the explore and adventure side of things which is a part that I thoroughly enjoy. The good thing is that more is still to come. Minecraft is still in Beta form and due for final release on 11th of November or 11.11.11. Notch still has many things to add to the game before this time so expect more updates in the coming weeks and months.
