Steam Specials Weekly Wrap-up #2

Steam Specials Weekly Wrap-up #2

Now that Steam Family Sharing has been officially out for a few days have you all been making use of it? I certainly have, joining my account with a few of my friends and suddenly I have over 250 games available to me. I have even considered rotating purchases of new games between these friends so that we all have access to everything we want. Even if that doesn’t end up happening I know that I probably won’t need to buy a new game (at least on PC) for a very long time now, and this could even delay my purchase of a next-g… sorry ‘this-gen’ console.

Some people just can’t have enough games however, and if you fall under that category this list of discounts below is certainly for you.

The Night of the Rabbit – £8.49 (50% off)

Steam page

The Night of the Rabbit Steam Sale Specials #2 Valve PC Daedalic Entertainment

Developers Daedalic Entertainment are well versed in the genre of adventure gaming and if you like a good story and a good puzzle then The Night of the Rabbit is the game for you. I had this to say when I reviewed the game back in 2013:

From the initial scenes of Jerry waking up to discover he still has two days of summer holiday left to the exploration of Mousewood, The Night of the Rabbit really performs well at keeping me engaged in the story. The unravelling mysteries of the forest keep me second guessing the direction of the story and how to progress with the game. Who are the mysterious foxes and lizards seen in Mousewood? Will I ever get to meet the Great Zaroff? And just what exactly is blue juice made from? The Night of the Rabbit is not without its flaws of course and with so many directions in which to venture the pacing of the game does suffer somewhat after the first visit to the town of Mousewood. It’s almost as if the games has its own Inception of puzzles, within puzzles, within… you get the idea.

Bounce over to Steam quickly as discount ends on March 17th.

F1 2013 Classic Edition – £9.99 (75% off)

Steam page

F1 2013 Steam Specials Sale #2 Codemasters Valve PC PS3 Xbox 360

The F1 franchise is probably the only type of sporting games that I would consider buying on a semi-regular basis. It seems that these days every year or two F1 is having a major overhaul to the rules, drivers, competing teams or there is some kind of scandal going on that will change the way the sport is run. With all this in mind it means that unlike other yearly sports games, there are usually significant changes to each F1 game as it is released.

With F1 2013 you of course have driver changes and new tracks along with the new challenge mode and the inclusion of classic cars and tracks to race on as well. There is also improved multiplayer, although I haven’t had a chance to play this yet so who knows if the harsh penalties of F1 2012 multiplayer will still be in effect or not.

Speed your way over to the Steam page as discount ends on 17th of March.

GTA: IV & GTA: San Andreas – £5.99 (80% off)

Steam page

GTA IV San Andreas PC PS2 Xbox Android iOS Steam Sale Specials Rockstar Valve #2

San Andreas is a classic in the GTA franchise. I still remember my first gang war, my first trip to the gym, the first tattoo and of course the first time I got fat from eating too much pizza. GTA III‘s plot and characters were probably more memorable to me but it was when playing San Andreas that I realised that Rockstar were pushing the game to be something more than just a rehash of the same ideas again and again and credit should be given for that. If you buy this bundle you also get GTA: IV included and if GTA isn’t really your thing, check out the rest of the Rockstar sale here.

Better shoot as the discounts end on 17th of March.

Grand Theft Auto V – Our Thoughts

Grand Theft Auto V – Our Thoughts

Grand Theft Auto V has proven to be a massive hit, it was breaking sales records within the first 24 hours it was on sale and has been receiving critical acclaim across many outlets. The Guardian’s review was featured heavily on the front page of its website. Here at Reticule Towers though, we haven’t yet delivered our Verdict, that will change in the coming weeks, but for now you can check out some thoughts from Chris and Kevin after the break.

L.A. Noire Gag Reel – Even Detectives Make Mistakes

L.A. Noire Gag Reel – Even Detectives Make Mistakes

L.A Noire’s cutting edge motion capture technology shows its less murderous side in this comedy gag reel released today by Depth Analysis, developers of the MotionScan Tech. The video shows a host of characters from the game fluffing their lines, laughing and joking just as if they were filming a movie.

It took seven years to develop the technology that was used in L.A. Noire. The actors motion captured faces mixed with the fully designed bodies gave them strange and unnatural movements at times, even stranger in the video below.

4. Bioshock Infinite

The game environment of Bioshock Infinite just looks utterly stunning. Columbia may be floating in the sky but still has all the trademarks of any large city. Towering sky scrapers protrude through the clouds, dozens of giant hard carved statues can be seen on buildings and in parks and even shops are visible on the cobbled streets. All this is amplified by the fact that below each towering building, every street and cinema there are hundreds of meters of air and a very long fall to your death.

Bioshock Infinite leaves the cramped surroundings of Rapture and explodes into the open air of Columbia with all the intricate design and originality that made the first game so brilliant. An entirely new array of enemies have been developed, new characters and a seemingly in depth story and dialogue to rival that of the first Bioshock.

3. Watch Dogs

Watch Dogs took everyone by surprise at E3 2012. Ubisoft took the choice to gamble on a new IP when almost everyone else was creating sequels to previous games or at the very least playing safe in a genre they were known for. Along side the announcement at E3 was a gameplay trailer which showed the stunning visuals of a city that looked very much like New York and a setting that rings true to the modern day lives of the average person.

In the world of Watch Dogs people are becoming ever more dependant on the technology that they use without ever really knowing who controls the information they input into certain devices and the accessibility to it. All it would take is one person who knew their way around that technology and a lot of disruption could be caused with relative ease. In the trailer Aiden Pearce, the stories antihero, can be seen blocking mobile phone signals, hacking traffic lights and listening in to peoples phone conversations and also seems to be pretty handy with a gun.

2. The Last of Us

The last of Us is a post apocalyptic city based adventure epic set in a world where living is a daily struggle to survive against the odds. From the media released so far by developers Naughty Dog, it’s clear to see the game world has been very well designed and is so intricate that it makes me believe that every building is accessible and has an elaborate interior of crumbling brick, usable tools and all the basics needed to survive just that little bit longer.

While the list of post apocalyptic games, especially those set in large cities is certainly not on the short side, what interests me about The Last of Us is the possibility for unique interactions between you the player (playing as Joel) and your AI controlled partner (Ellie). Solving puzzles, dealing with combat situations and exploration could all be made a lot more interesting under these circumstances.

1. Grand Theft Auto V

The fact that Rockstar have released very little information about Grand Theft Auto V, yet it seems to be one of the most talked about games among my friends and fellow gamers shows just how big this game is going to be come release day. The slow drip feed of screenshots that have been released recently are all that’s needed to whip people up into an excited frenzy over the smallest detail and possibility of what might be included. I think I would be fair in saying that when that first trailer was released on November 2nd the internet almost imploded.

In Grand Theft Auto V the player will be able to take control of three characters with heavily interconnected storylines, much like GTA IV did with its Ballad of Gay Tony and Lost and Damned DLC packs. This time however, the characters stories will be heavily influenced by each other instead of just passing connections.

There are many details that can be speculated about from the released media but one things for sure, GTA V looks downright beautiful. And with a game world larger than Red Dead Redemption, GTA IV and San Andreas combined Rockstars well earned credentials will no doubt fill this virtual space with masses of quality content.

Max Payne 3 – The Verdict

Max Payne 3 – The Verdict

Max Payne 3 has been a long time coming, and this caused some concern for me. Given that almost a decade has passed since Max Payne 2, accompanied by a change of development team, I was initially apprehensive as to whether Max’s third outing would hold my attention in the same way as its predecessors. As it turns out, though, I needn’t have worried.

LA Noire headed for PC

LA Noire headed for PC

Rockstar have announced that LA Noire will be making the leap to PC, with their Leeds studio heading up development on the title. Rockstar are promising improved fidelity and graphical improvements as well 3D integration and support for mouse and keyboard. You can read Ben’s verdict on the Xbox 360 version of the title over here.

This is good news for PC gamers who may have feared that Rockstar had abandoned the PC as a platform, here’s to hoping they can get around to porting Red Dead Redemption as well.

LA Noire is due for a release on PC this fall.
