The Sun Rises – Dawn of War 3 Announced

The Sun Rises – Dawn of War 3 Announced

As the Sun rises in the East, it brings with it the dawn, the Daw of War. That’s right, Sega and Relic have today announced Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III. Coming seven years after it’s much heralded younger brother, Dawn of War III is the dawn of another event – the first main game in the Dawn of War franchise to be published by Sega. Dawn is coming, but please don’t get it confused with Dorne!

Our Week in Games – Week 69

Our Week in Games – Week 69

The latest outrage in the games industry lies with the rebirth of a seminal favourite, Dungeon Keeper. EA released a new mobile version of the game this months using the now commonplace free-to-play philosophy. Their free-to-play methods seem to have done down like a paid of concrete boots with gamers, even the BBC picked up on the outrage. I haven’t played this monstrous, evil game yet…but my impression of mobile games like this is that you flick on once or twice during a day and have a quick blast before switching to something else. If you play like that, surely the in-app purchases aren’t such a big deal? But maybe that is just me wanting to play devil’s advocate as usual.

On a less controversial note, why not hit the break to check out our latest version of Our Week in Games.

The Alien Returns

The Alien Returns

The Alien franchise has had a bit of a rocky recent past what with the poorly received Colonial Marines from last year and a downward spiral in the movies as well. Things might be taking a turn for the better though as Sega today announced Alien: Isolation to a string of rave previews all over the web.

Reading the tales those writers had from their short demo at developers the Creative Assembly had me in shivers earlier…

Retro Reticule – Daze Before Christmas

Retro Reticule – Daze Before Christmas

The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting darker and the streets are getting busier, which can only mean one thing. It’s that most wonderful time of year again, it’s Christmas. While we’re starting to get festive though it’s easy to overlook that our favourite pastime is the grinch of the media world. During this time of year both music and film pump out hundreds of themed albums and movies, but while many games make a token effort (with DLC and such) fully-fledged Christmas games are few and far between. There are some though, like Funcom’s 1994 Mega Drive game Daze Before Christmas.

Company of Heroes II – Release Date Announced

Company of Heroes II – Release Date Announced

After THQ went the way of the Stephens Island Wren in early January, I and many others were more than a little concerned about the fate of those titles it held under its wing. Metro: Last Light and  Company of Heroes II were well into production when the publisher went into liquidation, and for a time rumours were rife that the titles would never see daylight.

Sonic Generations – The Verdict

Sonic Generations – The Verdict

For a video-game character so obsessed with travelling blindly forwards, Sonic the Hedgehog sure spends a lot of time looking over his shoulder. Between the upcoming re-release of Sonic CD, the ongoing Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and the sidescrolling elements of modern titles like Sonic Colours, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Sonic Generations is slightly redundant. Nevertheless, it’s here and pulling no punches about being a celebration of twenty years of Sonic history: even the minimalistic story begins with Sonic arriving for his own birthday party, before an unknown creature rips through time and plonks lanky modern Sonic in the past with his pudgy younger self.

Retrospective: Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Retrospective: Sonic the Hedgehog 2

The ridiculous thing about this retrospective is that I bothered to play Sonic the Hedgehog 2 at all.

I love the damned thing of course, but I’ve reached the point where playing it is entirely redundant. It’s not like I expected to find anything new. In fact, I’m all but certain that there isn’t anything new to see. I’ve stumbled across every single route, bust open every box and collected every ring. I may as well sit beneath a bodhi tree and play the game etched into my mind – the aspect ratio is a lot better and there’s always the outside chance I may reach enlightenment. Which would be just swell.
