Backbone – The Verdict

Backbone – The Verdict

“So much misguided effort pursuing only the shadow of the big picture – why?”

I’d been anticipating Backbone for some time, but I didn’t go into it with an excited smile. Not quite. That isn’t because it was released to polarising reviews, but rather because of the developer’s response to that reception. It goes without saying these developers put everything into their game, and goddamn, they have every right to stand by it with confidence and pride.

I am so very behind that…

XCOM: Enemy Within Diaries – Part Three

To recap from part two… Steph is on the floor of a railcar bleeding out. Jordan has a hole in his chest, slightly dead, and Chris has also bought the farm. Which is a shame as he was due to get a promotion soon…This leaves Nick, a 25% chance shot, 2 rather unhappy Thin men and two turns to save Steph.

New Star Trek Videos Explain Plot And Show Behind Scenes Footage

New Star Trek Videos Explain Plot And Show Behind Scenes Footage

With the release of the new Star Trek game just a few days away, developers Digital Extremes have seen fit to release a couple of new videos. The first gives a little more insight into the actual plot of the game, the character backgrounds and the appearance of the Gorn. The second shows some behind the scenes footage of the actors recording their voice parts for the game.

Brian Miller, the chap in the video, has talked a lot about how authentic this Star Trek release will be. The same actors will be used to voice the game as were in the newest Star Trek films. The same composers will create music for the game, the same sound effects will be used and while this is all well and good it’s yet to be proven that this will create a good game for the players. Movie tie-ins have a bad history and while I would love for this game to change my viewpoint, I think I’ll wait until I try the final product before I make any solid decisions.

Let Down By RAGE

Let Down By RAGE

I’m a few months late to the party, but I have just completed RAGE, and I don’t think I have ever felt quite so let down by a game ending. I am really disappointed with how iD Software approached the ending of the game, it feels like they just gave up when they got to that last level. Spoilers abound after the jump.

Hot Springs Story – The Verdict

Hot Springs Story – The Verdict

There is something curiously addictive about success. An addictiveness that Kairosoft simultaneously enjoys as a company and provides in their games. Hot Springs Story is the sequel to Game Dev Story – the critically acclaimed management sim that won the hearts and minds of casual and hardcore gamers alike back in 2010.  The premise of this installment? Build the best hot spring spa money can buy. The gameplay is beautifully simplistic, the player constructs and expands their spa to boost income and improve the quality of the spa’s facilities.

Paul Dini – Batman: Arkham Asylum Interview

Paul Dini – Batman: Arkham Asylum Interview

Batman

Emerging from the Batcave today on the consoles, and in two weeks on PC, Batman:Arkham Asylum sees the caped crusader take on his old nemesis The Joker in one of the darkest videogame adaptations of the famous Batman yet. Paul Dini is probably most famous for his work on arguably the best Batman cartoon in Batman: The Animated Series, creating the character of Harley Quinn and, most importantly to us, is the scriptwriter for Batman: Arkham Asylum. We flew out our questions (taking our Shark Repellent Spray) to Dini on Arkham, Mark Hamill and why we won’t be seeing Catwoman in our trail through the madhouse…
